Turmeric also known as golden spice belongs to the family zingeberaceae. Turmeric is considered to have originated in South East Asia. The commercially important part of turmeric is the modified underground stem called rhizome. The important active ingredient of this plant, collectively as Curcuminoids, consist of Curcumin and related compounds Demethoxy curcumin and Bis-demethoxy curcumin.
The medicinal properties of turmeric has been known for thousands of years, it was also used as a source of colour. In cooking it is used as a spice. In ancient Indian medicine it was used as a wound healer, for stomach ache, flatulence, poison etc.
The plant has acquired great importance in the present day world with its anti-aging, anti-cancer, anti-Alzheimer’s, anti-oxidant and a variety of other medicinal properties.
Turmeric extract is standardized for curcuminoids.
