Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is known as the king of spices, is a perennial climber belonging to the family piperaceae. It is an economically valuable medicinal plant with diverse pharmaceutical activities. The dried fruit of Piper nigrum, known as black gold is valued for its pungency contributed by the alkaloid, piperine and flavour by volatile oils. Black pepper originated in India and is cultivated mainly in India, Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam, Malaysia and Srilanka.
In ancient Indian medicine black pepper was used for alleviation of pain and chills, it was used in the treatment of rheumatism, influenza, muscular pains, fevers etc. Piperine also have bio-transformative effects and can enhance the bioavailability of different drugs.

Turmeric also known as golden spice belongs to the family zingeberaceae. Turmeric is considered to have originated in South East Asia. The commercially important part of turmeric is the modified underground stem called rhizome.
